Pima creation stories, Iroquois creation stories, and Biblical creation stories all have an element of good and evil in them. We chose this picture because we believe it gives numerous examples of the good and evil portrayed in the stories. The stories believe that man created the world and that females were made out of man. The picture portrays a strong man holding a hawk, a bird of prey, while of female is feminine, riding the wings of swans, birds of love.
Some other examples of good and evil in this picture are the light and dark clouds. All three stories talk about a world full of light, which is good, and a world of darkness, which is evil. Even in today’s world, we see sunlight as good and darkness as bad. The world needs a delicate balance of good and evil to sustain itself. Too much good can lead to bad and too much bad can lead to worse.
The animals in this picture represent good and evil also. We think of certain animals as being good and certain animals as being bad, just like people. Pima story of creation talks of Nooee, meaning the buzzard, having wings. When we think of a buzzard, we think of a large, black bird that preys on dead things. We tend to get an eerie feeling when we see them. The story also talks about a coyote which is the child of the sun and moon. When we think of a coyote, we usually think of a sacred, protected animal. The Iroquois creation story talks about a turtle. The turtle in the picture is part of the dark world that is appointed to carry the weight of the woman in return for earth. The turtle represents a strong, stable, but sly creature. In the Biblical creation, a serpent is talked about being evil and manipulating. The serpent is what enticed the woman to eat from the tree.

  1. I like the picture that you chose. You made an excellent point about good and evil/light and darkness in all of the stories.I also like how the picture you chose incorporated this sense of light and darkness. As far as animals go, I think it is important to note how in each of these stories, animals played a role in the creating of the world. For the Pima and the Iroquois, animals are important to their beliefs and this is evident in the way they include them in their stories.

  2. I like that you chose a picture with the clouds being light and dark. It is interesting also that woman is floating on a bird since all the stories seem to have a bird connected to the story. Animals, in general, have been a significant part of our history. Nooee represents a bird that preys on the dead and I think it's cool that you pointed that out too even though Nooee had a part in creating the valleys to assist humans to have something to drink. The fact that the picture represents a waterfall and some mountains is also an important part of the story where Nooee is concerned. The picture goes very well with your story.

  3. The picture you chose was great, I like how many elements were present in the photo. I'm glad you brought up the subject of the animals! I had noticed their inclusion in the story, but the way you talked about it really gave meaning to the creatures and their place in the story. Our views today of these animals may have been influenced by some of these stories. Sometimes, we tend to focus on the history of the world and its people, but animals are often left out. This is understandable considering many of the important events in history did not have much to do with them. But I think it is significant how animals play such large roles in each creation story. Not only that, but using animals as symbols is a great literary technique. More evidence that these stories should be included as literature! Great job.

  4. I like how your picture shows the significance of the animals in the stories of creation. When I read the stories I noticed that they mentioned animals but I never gave it any thought to the significance. Your exactly right when you talked about how we label animals as good and evil. When I read the stories of creation I remember the turtle but I didn't think of how it played a role in the creation. Thinking about it now, I also label animals when I think of good and evil. When I think of a snake I immediatly think evil. Your picture really backs up you post.

  5. I like the picture you chose and how it represented the animals from the creation stories. The picture especially reminds me of the Iroquois creation story because the turtle is larger than any of the other animals and it is below everything else in the picture which creates the illusion that it's supporting the land just like the turtle from the story. In each of the stories animals played an important role during the creation of earth. They were created to help people survive and this picture does a good job of showing animals working alongside people.

  6. This picture is very interesting. I like how you explained everything in the picture and how it represents something. Although i do not see much bad in this picture i understand what you mean by saying some of the animals maybe representing bad. Animals were key factors in all of the stories and there are obviously good animals and bad ones. I like the significance that is shown to everything that is in the picture.
